Authentic leaders talking openly about themselves and their journey so far
CEON Brown Group plc
At the helm of the FTSE250 listed multi-channel retailer, N Brown Group, Angela Spindler says she is “loving” her dream job; a move which signalled a much needed boost to aspiring future businesswomen. She also holds an NED role at the Manchester Airport Group.
Brought up in a consumer facing world, Angela’s earlier career saw her hold senior positions with Asda and Debenhams before she joined Burnley-based, private equity-backed discount store chain The Original Factory Shop, but perhaps surprisingly it was in pet food that the retail boss first made her mark.
Using the extensive knowledge gained throughout her previous roles, Angela tells Heather Jackson that training and personal development are critical in making you more marketable; that her top tip is employing those who “blow your mind” and building the best team possible; and how she faced the “burden of guilt” in the early days of her career journey whilst raising two children as a single mum.
Angela started her career in FMCG sales and marketing roles with Cadbury Schweppes, Coca Cola and then Mars. In 1997 she joined Asda. She stayed at Asda for 10 years, in that time she held a variety of positions: Property and Store Development Director, Food Trading Director, Managing Director and finally Global Managing Director for George clothing. She joined Debenhams plc as Managing Director in 2007 but within a year took up the opportunity to be CEO of a Private Equity backed value retail business “The Original Factory Shop”. She joined N Brown as CEO on 1 July 2013, an opportunity she describes as “the perfect fit”.
Angela was born and raised in Chester, she currently lives in Halifax with her husband Michael. She has two children Lewis & Abigail and a bearded collie – Gemma.
