Authentic leaders talking openly about themselves and their journey so far
Non ExecutivePortfolio Career
Pat is one of the most successful women in the global communications industry and has over 30 years' experience in the sector, from senior roles in multinational telecoms companies, to participating in technology company start-ups. But it doesn’t stop there. With an impressive NED portfolio and a recent Masters qualification in Environmental Studies, Pat continues to shine as one of today’s most authentic female leaders.
Here, she shares her early career choices and the decision forced upon her to leave “Big Blue” Corporation IBM to have a child; her thoughts on the “softer skills” needed by our future leaders to succeed; mentoring and the benefits on an “unbiased listening ear” and her personal story of battling cancer; poignantly adding “working (throughout) allows you to be a person, and not a patient.”
In a career of more than 35 years, Pat has been responsible for creating and growing major multi-national companies in the Internet, fixed and mobile telecoms sector. Following an early career in IBM and BT Pat became part of the founding team of MFS International and went on to lead UUNET International, and grew it to an annual turn-over of $1bn with large scale operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
She has also participated in start-ups of small technology companies and has board level experience in both large and small listed and private companies. Since 2002 Pat has been pursuing a portfolio career. She is Chairman of the Cavell Group and of Penzias Ltd, Senior Executive Director at Pace PLC, a Board member of the British Standards Institute and a Trustee of Finding Rhythms.
Pat also works as a Mentor at Merryck Mentors, working with Chief Executives of major companies to help them improve their business performance.
