It was the family business which lit the spark of entrepreneurship in Simon Calver. In this edition of AIJ.TV, the LOVEFiLM founder explains how he went from cashing up and stacking shelves at his father’s greengrocers, to launching one of the world’s leading streaming video providers.
Simon has been around household names from the start of his career thanks to a graduate marketing position at Unilever. Simon also recalls his time at Pepsi as they took on arch rivals Coca Cola and how he took this knowledge to the technology sector working for the inspirational Michael Dell. Ultimatley leading him to the helm of Mothercare until earlier this year.
Simon Calver was born the son of a Grocer in Gloucester, so grew up in the family business. He started off having a career in large blue chip companies. However he was CEO of LOVEFiLM, the online DVD and Digital Entertainment Company, which he led for seven years from post VC, backed start-up to the ultimate sale to Amazon Inc in 2011. In 2010 he was a finalist of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and has just completed a book on his experiences at LOVEFiLM.
He previously worked in brands and marketing with Unilever and PepsiCo, in charge of the UK business launching Pepsi Max, Pepsi Blue and the development of the Pepsi Music activity. At PepsiCo he also moved to the US as VP Sales Operations managing worldwide franchise partners and best practice sharing.
After Pepsi he was GM and VP for Dell Home and Small Business operations based in Ireland and also COO and President of Riverdeep Inc., the interactive digital education company.
Simon Calver was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Mothercare plc on 30th April 2012 to lead their three year Transformation and Growth turnaround plan.
He lives in West London with Cathy and their son Monty and their new arrival Nieve.
